PIES Library Entry: The Industries of the PIES Economy

The purpose of an economy is simple: to produce a way of life worth living.

To evaluate whether an economy succeeds at this task, we must understand what constitutes a good life.  Psychology, systems thinking, and lived human experience all point toward fundamental needs: survival, health, belonging, growth, stability, and coordination.

Traditional economic taxonomies categorize businesses by what they produce.  The PIES Taxonomy categorizes them by why they exist, how they contribute, and how they fit into the larger ecosystem.

PIES Library Entry: Why Missions Matter

Most companies have a mission statement.  Far fewer are actually mission-driven.

A mission statement is simply a declaration of why an organization exists.  It communicates purpose, direction, and identity to employees, customers, and stakeholders.

But a mission-driven organization goes much further.  Its mission is embedded into decision-making, governance, strategy, and culture.

This distinction is critical, and it’s how an organization creates true value and aligns itself with long-term societal well-being.

The PIES Economy has been designed from the ground up to effect transformational economic reform in America. This objective is broad, complex, and hard to define, but our mission statement is our best attempt to capture our vision of greatness – our idea of what it would mean to succeed.
