An economy is not just money.  It is the system through which society organizes ownership, production, cooperation, and distribution of the resources that shape everyday life.

When an economy operates like a cold-hearted machine, it uses you as fuel.  When an economy operates as an ecosystem and a machine, it can be designed to maintain balance and steward the people within it.

Ecosystem and Infrastructure

Behind the scenes of every economy is an infrastructure.  More specifically, there is a legal and financial infrastructure for determining who owns the businesses that make up the economy:

Stock markets.

Modern stock markets determine ownership and control of businesses at a massive scale, and, in doing so, quietly shape the direction of the entire economy.  The PIES Economy is an attempt to redesign that financial infrastructure around stewardship rather than short-term extraction.  The diagrams below explore both sides of the system:
